Piano Tuning

Piano regulation is the process of adjusting the many mechanical components of the piano action so they work together smoothly, evenly, and efficiently. It includes setting key height and dip, adjusting hammer blow distance, aligning hammers, regulating repetition and letoff, and carefully setting aftertouch—the small amount of key travel that remains after the hammer has been released. Proper regulation ensures that each key responds consistently, allowing the action to translate your finger movement into sound with accuracy and control.

When a piano is well regulated, it feels responsive, predictable, and comfortable under the fingers, making it easier to play with confidence and expression. The keys return quickly, notes repeat cleanly, and dynamic control feels natural. Each key should have the same feel and touch throughout the whole scope of the piano. In contrast, a poorly regulated piano can feel uneven, sluggish, or tiring to play, with inconsistent touch that makes musical control frustrating and limits your ability to get the most out of your piano.

We regulate each piano to the standards set by the Piano Technician’s Guild and by the piano’s manufacturer for the best feel and sound your piano can achieve.
